Quests are sparked usually by an exclamation mark or question mark on the map. Val Royeaux is starkly beautiful, pristine and expensive-looking. The desert looks like something out of the Southwest, replete with hidden oases and redrock. While the aforementioned completitionist in me means I've spent most of my time in the Hinterlands exploring its massive scope and dozens of quests-including one which unlocks horseback riding which is nice-I've also ventured forth to beautiful cities, vast deserts, and bogs crawling with undead. Better still, unlike the last game, there's tons of variety. Still, everything from the characters to the gorgeous vistas looks great.

Facial and body animation are improved over previous games in the series but still not up to the quality we're seeing in some contemporaries, such as Advanced Warfare. The terrain is where graphics in this game really shine. (I've played a lot of the game so far at 4k resolution with settings near to maxed out and anti-aliasing turned off, and it's simply stunning.)

I played some on the Xbox One as well-PS4 review copies were generally not sent out due to the problems with that console's update 2.0-and while the game looks lovely, it simply doesn't compare to the sort of visuals you can squeak out on PC. Leliana from Origins, is part of the Inquisition's leadership, though not playable. Varric from the second game is a companion right off the bat. On your way, you pick up companions and meet familiar faces. The Inquisition is basically a good and noble group of mages, ex-Templars, and others not interested in the petty wars and politics of their former groups and more interested in stopping the demons and picking up the pieces of the war.

One thing leads to another and the Inquisition is born, of which you are its representative and one of its leaders. Immediately a suspect, it turns out you have the unique power to close demon-spawning rifts called Fade Rifts, though not the very largest rift which remains swirling in the sky above. The summit's destruction is shrouded in mystery since everyone there is dead and you have no memory of what transpired. Many of the leaders of both sides, including the Divine, the head of the Chantry, are left dead.

You play as the lone survivor of a terrible destruction at a summit of Templar and Mages designed to put an end to a long-running bloody war.
